Thiruvananthapuram: P. G. Shajimon, the branch manager of Thalayolaparambu Farmers’ Service Cooperative Bank, recently won the best organic farmer award.

Shajimon, age 55, is known for his mission to provide pesticide-free rice and vegetables to the Cochin Cancer Society.

Dr. V. P. Gangadharan, who treated Shajimon’s wife for cancer, inspired him to start organic farming.

Shajimon, from Thalayolaparambu, is set to retire in December and cared for his wife for 17 years.

He cultivates organic rice and vegetables on five acres of land, donating the produce to Dr. Gangadharan’s society.

Recently, Shajimon has been honored by local organizations for his achievement as the best organic farmer.

Former agriculture minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran visited Shajimon’s farm, praising him for providing pesticide-free vegetables.

Despite his busy bank role, Shajimon focused on organic farming to help his ailing wife, guided by Dr. Gangadharan.

Shajimon initially farmed on his 25-cent property, and local landowners generously offered their idle land for farming.

After retirement, Shajimon plans to rear chickens and ducks and offer free mammogram exams on his wife’s death anniversary.
